Several organochlorinated contaminants, including numerous pesticides, were determined in coastal sediments from the Caspian Sea. The most important contaminants were p,p'-DDT (up to 7400 pg g(-1)) and its breakdown products, p,p'-DDD (up to 3400 pg g(-1)) and p,p'-DDE (up to 1300 pg g(-1)). Although the contamination was most severe in Azerbaijan, the sediment concentrations and percentage distribution of the three DDT-related compounds indicated that such contamination constitutes a contemporary and ubiquitous problem in the Caspian Sea. Lindane represented the second most significant contaminant, particularly in the Russian Federation, with concentrations up to 609 pg g(-1). The concentrations of HCB and other chlorinated pesticides (cis- and trans-chlordane, methoxychlor, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, aldrin, endrin, and endosulfans) were lower and not generally of concern, but the pesticides did demonstrate markedly different distributions reflecting differing agricultural usage in the region. The concentrations of Sigma PCBs were also quite low and ranged from 0.03 to 6.4 ng g(-1), with the highest amounts in the Russian Federation and Azerbaijan. 相似文献

Grade estimates are often of weak precision in the case of heterogeneous media, due to their high variability, even at small scale. Qualitative information is then useful to improve the quality of the estimates, without prohibitive additional costs. How can we sample such variables, and detect the ones that are of interest for the estimation of grades? The general methodology is presented and then illustrated for the estimation of the benzo(a)pyren (a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, PAH) concentration in soils, sampled on a former coking plant. The transport of dissolved gases in the anoxic sediments of Cape Lookout Bight, North Carolina, is controlled by diffusion and bubble ebullition and exhibits a distinct seasonal cycle. Detailed seasonal profiles of CH4, N2 and 222Rn and direct gas flux measurements indicate that ebullition dominates the flux of all dissolved gases across the sediment-water interface during summer months, and is of major importance on an annual basis. Transport within the upper 6–8 cm of sediment appears to be controlled by molecular diffusion of gases. Transport at greater depths is controlled by diffusion in winter and ebullition in summer. Rn-222 profiles were used to estimate the rate of stripping of dissolved gases within the CH4 production zone (10–30 cm); rates averaged 3–5 percent per day and agreed with estimates derived from N2 profiles. As a result of summer ebullition, the sediments of the bight are never at saturation with respect to the major gases present in seawater. Evidence from other sites suggests that ebullition may be an important transport process in many coastal sediments, and may provide mechanism for the transport of volatile reduced compounds between anoxic sediments and the atmosphere. 222Rn is a useful tracer for quantifying this transport. 相似文献

The release of remineralized N and P from the organic-rich anoxic sediments of Cape Lookout Bight is controlled by processes occurring within the sediment column and at the sediment-water interface. The relatively rapid rates of temperature dependent microbial degradation of organic matter support seasonally varying nutrient fluxes ranging from 20 to 1200 μmol·m?2·hr?1 for dissolved ammonium and from ? 20 to 120 μmol·m?2·hr?1 for total dissolved phosphate (measured in situ over the period October, 1976 to October, 1978). Molecular diffusion along steep vertical pore water concentration gradients measured simultaneously cannot explain the high fluxes observed during warmer months. Gradients for ammonium and phosphate ranged from 0.33 to 1.10 and from 0 to 0.29 μmol·cm?3pw·cm?1s respectively. These high summertime fluxes appear to result from increased sediment-water transport associated with bubble tubes created and maintained by low-tide methane gas bubble ebullition. When these tubes are present, apparent bulk sediment diffusivities calculated from concurrent studies of methane and radon-222 sediment-water exchange are 1.0–3.1 times greater than molecular diffusivities. Nutrient fluxes calculated via Fick's first law taking into account this enhanced transport and the differential diffusive mobilities of dissolved ammonium, phosphate and phosphate ion pairs indicate that removal by aerobic adsorption and/or biological uptake at the sediment-water interface plays an important role in controlling nutrient exchange in these sediments. 相似文献

The subsidence of the Tyrrhenian Basin is analysed based on numerous MCS reflection data and related seismic velocities, and calibrated using subsidence curves versus time at ODP Leg 107 sites 654 and 652 on the Sardinian margin. Two main phases of rifting are clearly defined for the margin-basin evolution: the first, beginning at 7 Ma, split the Sardinian-Calabrian margins, the second, beginning at 5 Ma formed the Central oceanic subbasins.Thermal models, based on thinned crust geometry from reflection-refraction data, are used which consider both vertical and horizontal conduction over time along a NW-SE transect across the entire Tyrrhenian Basin from Sardinia to Calabria. In general, there is a close agrrement between the predicted and the observed surface heat flow and the rate of subsidence over time. However, within the oceanic domain an initial subsidence must be chosen about 1000 m greater than observed on typical spreading centers, i.e., at about 3500 m as postulated in numerous back-arc basins.Thermal models, constrained by subsidence analysis and gravity observations, imply a large difference for the Moho depth beneath the Sardinian margin as determined after refraction seismic experiments. The upper mantle, hot but with high density, would be situated much higher than is postulated by seismic data and probably includes 7.3–7.4 km/s velocity layers previously interpreted as deep crustal layers. 相似文献

Quantification of intra-specific morphological variability of aquatic biota along environmental gradients can produce biological
proxies that can be applied to paleoenvironmental reconstructions. This morphology-derived proxy information can be especially
valuable when dealing with low-diversity fossil assemblages, i.e. in situations when paleoenvironmental inference based on
species composition of the assemblage is less effective. We analyzed valve size and outline shape of the widespread and highly
environmentally tolerant ostracode species Limnocythere inopinata collected in 15 lakes and ponds of Western Mongolia. We quantified shape variability among and within these living populations
in relation to water chemistry and physical habitat variables. Our results indicate that: (1) a population’s mean valve outline
is related to habitat type, (2) surface water temperature, the alkalinity to sulphate ratio, specific conductance and total
phosphorus together explain a high portion of the variance in mean valve outline between populations, and (3) a quantitative
model inferring the alkalinity to sulphate ratio from mean valve outline has an R2 of 0.88 and RMSEP of 0.17. These results
corroborate the hypothesis that high morphological variability in this ostracode species is due to both ecophenotypic variance
and high clonal diversity associated with a mixed reproductive strategy (a combination of sexual and parthenogenetically reproducing

Two approaches can be distinguished in studies of climate change impacts on water resources when accounting for issues related to impact model performance: (1) using a multi-model ensemble disregarding model performance, and (2) using models after their evaluation and considering model performance. We discuss the implications of both approaches in terms of credibility of simulated hydrological indicators for climate change adaptation. For that, we discuss and confirm the hypothesis that a good performance of hydrological models in the historical period increases confidence in projected impacts under climate change, and decreases uncertainty of projections related to hydrological models. Based on this, we find the second approach more trustworthy and recommend using it for impact assessment, especially if results are intended to support adaptation strategies. Guidelines for evaluation of global- and basin-scale models in the historical period, as well as criteria for model rejection from an ensemble as an outlier, are also suggested. 相似文献

The structure of electric current and magnetic helicity in the solar corona is closely linked to solar activity over the 11-year cycle, yet is poorly understood. As an alternative to traditional current-free “potential-field” extrapolations, we investigate a model for the global coronal magnetic field which is non-potential and time-dependent, following the build-up and transport of magnetic helicity due to flux emergence and large-scale photospheric motions. This helicity concentrates into twisted magnetic flux ropes, which may lose equilibrium and be ejected. Here, we consider how the magnetic structure predicted by this model – in particular the flux ropes – varies over the solar activity cycle, based on photospheric input data from six periods of cycle 23. The number of flux ropes doubles from minimum to maximum, following the total length of photospheric polarity inversion lines. However, the number of flux rope ejections increases by a factor of eight, following the emergence rate of active regions. This is broadly consistent with the observed cycle modulation of coronal mass ejections, although the actual rate of ejections in the simulation is about a fifth of the rate of observed events. The model predicts that, even at minimum, differential rotation will produce sheared, non-potential, magnetic structure at all latitudes. 相似文献

AbstractMulti-stakeholder sustainability certification schemes have become a favorite instrument for applying good governance, though studies indicate their inefficiency at the producer level. In this study, we used a mixed-method approach to first, map the institutional context of independent oil-palm smallholders in rural Sumatra while, second, reflecting upon the impact of the Smallholder Standard proposed by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil on smallholder management practices. We hold that non-recognition of micro-scale perspectives within governance processes may partially explain noncompliance with certification principles among smallholders. The Smallholder Standard appears unable to mitigate challenges important for smallholders, who in turn cannot properly comply with it, due to problems including weather instability and high management costs. We suggest that certification schemes need to work on some overlooked but essential preconditions of good governance, namely gaining micro-level visibility and acceptance. 相似文献

The impact of continuous disposal of fine-grained sediments from maintenance dredging works on the suspended particulate matter concentration in a shallow nearshore turbidity maximum was investigated during dredging experiment (port of Zeebrugge, southern North Sea). Before, during and after the experiment monitoring of SPM concentration using OBS and ADV altimetry was carried out at a location 5 km west of the disposal site. A statistical analysis, based on the concept of populations and sub-sampling, was applied to evaluate the effect. The data revealed that the SPM concentration near the bed was on average more than two times higher during the dredging experiment. The disposed material was mainly transported in the benthic layer and resulted in a long-term increase of SPM concentration and formation of fluid mud layers. The study shows that SPM concentration can be used as an indicator of environmental changes if representative time series are available. 相似文献
